Christians from the churches in Otley meet on the first Saturday in the month. There is a simple breakfast of bread rolls and a hot drink followed by a few thoughts and shared prayer. This month the Prayer Breakfast is at the Parish Church and will include additional opportunities for prayer both together and alone. The season of Advent is a time of expectation and preparation where we pray for the coming of Christ’s kingdom presence in our lives and where we live. One key focus will be the General Election on December 12th.
There is no obligation to be there from 8am, but come when you can and stay for as long as you wish. The timetable will be as follows:
- 8.00 to 8.30 – Light breakfast
- 8.30 to 9.15 – Prayer and Share time led by Graham Buttanshaw
- 9.15 to 9.30 – Explore and pray at ‘Prayer Stations’
- 9.30 to 10.15 and 10.15 to 11.00 – Short ‘front-led’ introduction and presentation before praying in groups or alone
The church will remain set up for prayer for the rest of the morning and refreshments will be available in the church Saturday café.

For 2 weeks in March 2019, Otley hosted its first ever night shelter for 10 male destitute asylum seekers, who were waiting for their asylum claims to be heard. The Shelter was set up by representatives from Otley Churches and the Otley Welcomes group alongside a WYDAN co-coordinator (West Yorkshire Asylum Seeker Network). Night shelters have been set up by WYDAN for the past 4 winters in volunteer churches throughout the Leeds area.
We are planning to hold our second night shelter in Otley from 2 – 16 March 2020 and need volunteers to help run it.
For all those interested in helping with the Nightshelter we are having this initial meeting. At the the meeting our WYDAN co-ordinator will explain about the project and we will talk in more detail about the way that volunteers can help and have sign up sheets for those who wish to volunteer.
We need volunteers to:
- welcome our guests and socialise with them
- to cook an evening meal
- provide some entertainment/music
- sleep overnight in the shelter
- supervise breakfast
- help with setting up / clearing away the Nightshelter
- washing laundry
- provide showering in their own homes
